I’ve been trying to get some new songs going, and with all the hullabaloo about the recent reissues of the Beatles catalog, their influence is definitely worming its way into me. The main thing that everyone leaves out or misses when mining that vein is that pounding piano at the base of many of their songs. So I busted out the Casio keyboard I bought last year and haven’t really touched since. Never played before in my life save for stumbling through a little single note melody here and there. I sat down with the intent of not getting up until I had something that sounded like actual piano playing, no matter how long that might be. It should have been no surprise (but yet it was) that what came out was much more Gospel than Beatles. Two weeks of listening to Sam Cooke trying to cry out a broken heart will do that to you. I’ll try and finesse my playing a bit and flesh it out tomorrow.
